The law says…

After a motor vehicle accident where someone is injured or property is damaged:

§You must stop and give assistance.
§You must provide your name and address to the other driver(s) involved and owners of any property that's been damaged.
§You must report the accident to police if anyone is injured, or if property is damaged where the owner is not in attendance (e.g. a knocked-down fence).
§You must not drive away from an accident in an 'un-roadworthy' vehicle — if the damage means it's not safe to be on the road.

At the scene of the accident

1Stop your vehicle. If you're blocking traffic or the location isn't safe, move to a safe place nearby. The law requires you to stop.
2Check for injuries. Ensure assistance is provided to anyone injured. Call an ambulance or doctor if required.
3Notify police. Especially if there are injuries, a hit-and-run, or a dispute about liability.
4Get full details of vehicles involved — drivers' names, addresses, phone numbers, registration numbers and insurance details.
5Call us on (08) 9248 5564 and we'll arrange everything for you.

Write down names, addresses and telephone numbers of all witnesses.
If you have a camera, photograph the accident location, damage to all vehicles and property, and other relevant details of the scene.
